School Spirit Week!

  • Monday, May 26-No School- Memorial Day
  • Tuesday, May 27- Mis Match Day! Come to school in your mismatched outfit- Be Creative!
  • Wednesday, May 28-Color-Riffic Day! Come to school dressed in red!
  • Thursday, May 29- Favorite Sports Day! Come to school wearing your favorite team's color, hat or sports jersey!
  • Friday, May 30-Fun Day!Come to school wearing our school colors, Blue and White. Wear shorts and T-Shirts because we will be enjoying all the outdoor FUN activities: races, water games, golfing, basketball and a lot more!

Moon Rope

This week we will be reading Moon Rope. The story is about two friends, Fox and Mole, who wants to go to the moon. They both try to climb a rope that leads to the moon, but Fox is only successful. What happens to Mole? You'll have to read along with your child to find out the ending!

Scholastic Book Fair


Don't forget to join us on Thursday Night, April 24 for the Scholastic Book Fair. The Fair will be held in the school's library from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.. Also, the students will be able to purchase books on Friday during their Library Period.

The Puddle

This week we will begin reading The Puddle by David McPhil. The main idea of the story is about a little boy who plays in a puddle with lots of imaginary friends. Which imaginary friends does he meet? We can't tell you, you'll have to read it with your child to find out!

In our Phonics Reader we will be reading Feeding Wild Birds which reinforces the sound of long i and Ginger the Gerbil which will introduce the sound of /j/g, dge .

Please continue having your child use his/her Study Book to reinforce the skills that we are working on in class.

Mrs. Kegelman and Mrs. Durant's Reading Clubs

Last week ,Mrs. Kegelman's Reading Club read and summarized ,one of my favorite stories, When The Doorbell Rang by Pat Hutchins. Mrs. Kegelman gives Tyrese a great big Thumbs Up ! Tyrese took When The Doorbell Rang Home, read it to his mom and added it to his Reading Log. Way to Go,Tyrese!
This week, Farid, Isaiah and Tyrese read a great story, How The Chick Tricked The Fox. Yes! You read it right; a small little chick tricks the sly fox! How? Ask the boys when you see them. They will tell you how it all happened. Way to Go Boys!
Mrs. Durant's Reading Club is reading a fun story, Tie Dye. Can you make a prediction on what the story is about by the title? Make your prediction and tell someone in Mrs. Durant's Reading Club. They will tell you if your prediction was correct! Great Job, Mrs. Durants's Reading Club!
If you are interested in reading either of the books, stop by Room 5 and ask Mrs. Kegelman or Mrs. Durant.

The "Green Thumbs" of Room 6 !


On Friday, April 11, we planted sunflower, pumpkin, pea and bean seeds.
First, we put soil into our cups. We only filled our cups half-way with soil. Next, we put two seeds into the soil. Then ,we covered the seeds with more soil. Last,we added a little water to our soil and placed them on the windowsill.
With air, sunlight and water our seeds will begin to sprout! We will keep you posted on the growth of our plants!

Staff Development Day

There will be no school on Friday, April 18. The teachers will be participating in a District Staff Development Day. School will resume on Monday, April 21.

Frog and Toad All Year by Arnold Lobel





This week we will be reading Frog and Toad All Year. It's a story about two best friends, Frog and Toad. Frog tells his friend Toad a story about how he learned when Spring is coming. We can't tell you the signs of Spring that Frog tells Toad about; you'll have to read our story to find out!

Vocabulary: working, caught, son, near, cold

Reading Comprehension Skill: This week we will be working on Making and Confirming Predictions. We make predictions by what we know about the story, what we read in the story, or something that happened in our lives that we can relate to the story. If we find clues while we are reading, we can always change our prediction. At the end of the story, we all discuss if our predictions were right.

Spelling/ Phonics
In Phonics we will be working on the long/a/ sound. We will be using -ain and -ay to make the sound of long/a/.

Our spelling words this week have the -ain and -ay combination.

Spelling Words: day, may, play, rain, tail,trail, train, pail, today

Grammar- In Grammar we will be working on verbs. Verbs are action words, for example, jump, run, sleep, dance, and eat are action words.

Mr. Bruni







Last week we received an email from Mr. Bruni. He said, " Hi Shining Stars! I heard that you have been Shining Bright! Keep Shining- you are the BEST! If I get the chance, maybe I will visit you before the school year is over. I miss you! Love, Mr. Bruni"

We hung up his email and his picture by our door so we can remember what he told us to do, to Keep Shining!

Snacks

Thank you to the parents who sent in snacks last week. It seems as if we have enough for this week. Thanks you for your generosity!

Our Class Trip To Hagley's Museum

First , I would like to thank Mr. Burton and Ms. Dunbar for joining us on our trip to Hagley's Museum. Next, I would like to thank all the children for being Shining Stars while on the trip. Everyone was so respectful and cooperative! Even the staff at Hagley's complimented the children. The students had a great time. They had the opportunity to bake cookies, dress up in old clothes, wash laundry and experience Sunday School. And lastly, I would like to thank Ms. Gregory for planning such a fun and educational class trip!

The Story of a Blue Bird

This week we will begin Book 5!
Our first story will be The Story of a Blue Bird.
A young bird is scared to learn how to fly until he meets a friend to help him. Guess who his friend is? We can't tell you, you'll have to read it with your child to find out who helps him!

Make Your Own Sundae

The Shining Stars, again, filled their Good Behavior Token jar. Also, we won the Cougar Good Behavior Trophy. Everyone has been respectful, responsible and cooperative. We have been working together as a Team. Thumbs Up Room 6!

Good-Bye and Hello!


We want to say Good-Bye to Mr. Bruni and Hello to Mrs. Alexander!
Mr. Bruni retired from Colonial School District to be the new Superintendent of the William Penn School District which is located in PA.
Good luck, Mr. Bruni! We will miss you but we will never forget you!
Mrs. Alexander is our new Principal. We welcome you and we are very excited and happy that you are here with us!
